Benoit, very good point.

DS 7.5 actually accepts AVI type 2 but only files up to 2 Gigs.  I use QuickTime when preparing to import to DS, and I like to use the Microcosm Codec from Digital Anarchy. It is a lossless codec that usually makes the file sizes about 1/3rd to 1/2 of uncompressed.  It supports up to 64bit RGBA.

Check out: http://www.digitalanarchy.com/micro/micro_main.html   It's $100 and worth every penny, IMHO.

Here's another good tip for those "good" clients who bring in miniDV from time to time:  If you find yourself in a jam (and the few DV Studio decks in your facility aren't available to digitize) then you can use a little $39 program called "Scenalyzer" to capture DV via 1394. You can set it up to capture type1 AVIs, or type2 (giving it a file size limit). You can also capture all four channels of audio, and can capture the audio as separate wave files instead of interleaved. Scenalyzer is also a very amazing little program. It can do optical scene detection (even after capture) and allows you to capture an entire DV tape at fast shuttle in about 5 minutes. You can then check off which scenes you want to capture at full rez.  Here's the good part:  you can export any DV files back out tape with backup info stored in the date stamp area. This means you can save all the files right back out to DV and can re-import them anytime so that when you go to restore your DS project a few months later, you can simply restore the files, then re-capture into DS. The down side to this method is that you get no TC into DS, but if you keep careful notes, you can always get back frame accurately.
For me -- it's mostly the straggling b-roll shots that come in on DV, so I don't have to use it as often.

Just be careful if saving as AVI within Vegas, as I believe the default
version of that format is 2.0, which DS doesn't support.
