DS is special in that it can hold more than one media with different 
size and or compression in one project. When you import sd media - do it 
in a sd sequence. Open the sequence in a HD sequence and make sure your 
scaling settings under sequence preferences are set to keep media in 
original size and position and scale effects and keep aspect ratio, now 
you should be able to recapture entire timeline with HD media.

This can be a little tricky before you get the knack of it so I would 
advice you to make a small scale test to niggle out all questions that 
might arrise on the way.
