Hey all,
Just wanted to get back about the problems I was having. We tracked a
capture problem for a couple days and it finally came down to a bad drive.
The testing software wasn't showing any drive failures. It was kinda
bizarre but nothing new. Just before I left WISH we had the exact same
problem but it took much longer to track that time.
As far as the weird shutting down thing. Well we never figured out what it
was. One of our engineers did a XP restore from last week which took the
system settings back a week. So some where along the way since last week a
setting was either changed or a virus was downloaded. I ran a couple virus
scanners and they found nothing. So I'm still not sure what caused it but I
do know that it's fixed.
Now I can finally start working... :-)
Thanks for everyones input.

Regarding system shutdown:
Is there a dialogue that comes up before the shutdown?
If so, what does it say, because that is a clue of what is going on.
Some services are set to auto restart the system if they fail and hence
that's how a "virus" can shut a machine down, so if you know the
service, you can remove the shutdown the system setting from that
service. For instance RPC failure is usually set to restart the system
upon failure.
Also, next time it shuts down assuming there is a little time, open up a
command shell and type shutdown /a, or is it shutdown -a forget now.
That will disable the shutdown process from the unhappy service.
Certainly there are fixes out there from Microsoft especially to deal
with this stuff, but a clean reinstall will NOT fix it unless you have
the absolute latest CD from Microsoft itself, otherwise you will be back
where you started.
Some infections don't show up the viruses too well, so do read the
dialogue warning messages if any, or use the event log. Also, enable the
view ALL files including hidden and system files because some scanners,
may require that option turned on for the user.

I do not know how long AVID warrants for. Seagate has a 5 year. Find out
who made the actual drives!
Try opening the task manager and watching services and processes to see
what service is shutting it down. Also it is worth watching the
performance monitor to see if the CPU usage spike and locks up.
If you do not have the Windows Hot Fixes updated do that.

#1 So how long is the Avid warranty on the drives? I'm still not sure
if they are out of warranty or not.
#2 So far it seems to be only DS. We were trying to do a scan and the
system keeps shutting down.
No new software.
Internet connection but no email accessing done there.
We are currently using trend micro house call to do a scan. i think we
will try our virus scanner that our engineering department has next.
Thanks Howard

If the drives are out of AVID warranty and were made by Seagate you can
get warranty replacement through them. they will probably supply you
with a refurb that is blank. If there is an AVID sticker over the
original manufacturer's label it can be removed by softening it with a
hair dryer and peeling it off gently.
Check the Microsoft XP downloads website for the latest Hotfixes and
install them.
Questions:
If you start some other program after booting besides DS will it still
do an auto shutdown or is DS the only one that will prevent the auto
shutdown?
Have you installed any new software, drivers or hardware during the
move?
Do you have an internet connection on the DS machine and do you open
email there?
Do you use an Anti-Virus such as Symantec and update definitions often?

Subject: Drive Question & Another Weirdness
Hey all,
First question. What is the warranty coverage on Avid drives? We have
a 2gb JBOD Mediarray II with 14 drives. We have a bad drive that needs
replaced. I thought the warranty on those was couple years or
something.
Can someone confirm this for me?
Also, all of a sudden my computer has some weirdness going on. After I
log in, if I don't launch into the DS, my system will shut itself down.
If I launch into DS it's fine. But if I sit on the desktop at startup
or after exiting the DS, the system goes into a self induced shutdown.
Anyone else seen this? Is this a virus? It doesn't do it all the time
but when it does it will do it many times in a row.
7.5 on a Evo W8000 Equinox.
Thanks in advance.
