Hey All,
I have a client who just bought a Nitris system and the configuration was unlike any I have seen in any other system. I know there was a short discussion about this recently, and would like to revisit the subject. The Nitris in question was configured with the D: Drive being the Audio/Projects drive and the F: Drive being the Video Storage drive. Now I know the response was that it shouldn't matter, that DS will figure out proper storage locations if a project is restored on the machine that originated on another system. (My personal thoughts on this in a moment)
But...when you open the the F: drive, you find a video folder, a videostorage folder, an audio folder, an audiostorage folder and a DS Temporary Files folder. On the D: drive you will find an audio folder, a video folder and a DS Projects folder. No DS Archives folder to be found anywhere. Now, not only were there projects inside the DSver7.5 folder, but outside the folder all willy nilly. I recommended that my client reconfigure their system, reinstalling the software so that the D: drive was the video storage drive and the F: drive was the Projects/Audio drive. ONLY the videostorage folder and interactive caching should be present on the D: drive, and ONLY the audiostorage folder, DS Projects folder and the DS Archives folder should reside on the F: drive upon install. What you put on the F: Drive after install is your business.
So the resident engineer, not DS savvy, gets on the phone with Avid, and the tech says their configuration shouldn't matter, DS will figure it all out and it won't cause any problems if the audio and video storages are on the same drive and that interactive caching can go anywhere and the archive folder wasn't an important issue. WHAT!?!?!
Please someone tell me I'm not losing my mind and that my recommendations are sound and that the Avid tech should be throttled out by the woodshed. Otherwise, feel free to call me a moron and set me straight on the new and improved "DS is not a finicky beast" models that are now being released. Oh yeah, Nitris v7.5, QFE3. Why not QFE4? Because the engineer argued that QFE4 was version 7.6!
(Now, a few personal thoughts if you will)
Why, after all these years with the same configuration, is Avid now shipping their systems with the audio and video drives reversed? I have seen this on a few systems recently and don't agree with it at all. I have worked on hundreds of systems throughout the years and EVERY SINGLE ONE was mapped the same! Is it not bad enough that the feature sets change constantly now, the buttons move around on a whim, features are broken with new implementations and now we have to reorient ourselves on any given system because the storage configs are changing? Please someone, in a world on the brink of insanity, reason this out for me so that I don't completely go mad and start talking to my imaginary friend Fred.
Thank you for listening.
