Tone, Kane,

Thanks so much for your responses.  For a moment there, I thought we were heading for a configuration free for all.  I have set up many DS's, worked on countless others, and can really see a slow down in workflow if you're used to always hunting for a certain drive to find files, etc.  For an owner or user who knows from no other configuration, I can see how this doesn't matter, but this installation and configuration was completely batty.

Thanks for saving what's left of my mind.

Hi Sean,

What you say is right, and the tech was indeed mostly wrong.

1. The one thing the tech got right is that it doesn't matter a jot what
drive letters are used for project storage or video storage; DS's indexers
take care of all that.  However, if you'd prefer to have it the way it
always used to be (projects/archives/audio on F, video on D) then feel free
to set it up that way.

2. I agree with Kane that it sounds as if the original setup was done by
someone who had no idea how to install a DS.  That might explain all the
extra folders.  However, as long as the Indexers are correctly configured,
you can simply delete the "extra" folders because DS won't be going
anywhere near them.

3. The tech is wrong to say that it's okay to have audio and video storage
on the same drive.  Whilst you can do so, it's unsupported and is asking
for trouble.

4. The lack of a DS Archives folder reinforces the view stated in #2 above.

5. Interactive cache should be directed to the video drive, whatever letter
that has mapped to it.

Personally, I couldn't care less what letters are mapped to what drives
just so long as DS is correctly setup - it's the folder/share names that
are important. However, as I said above, it's simple enough to change if it
bothers you, but should ideally be done prior to DS installation.

Regards,
Tone :)
