The hotshot FCP kids I know would kill for some time on a Nitris. The MC editors seem to be a lot more complacent in their skillset and happy enough doddling along at their same old pace. The facilities I work in pretty much all have FCP system tucked in a back corner. Without fail the FCP editors are knocking on my door asking for time at my side to learn Nitris. They see FCP as a stepping stone while most of the Avid MC editors look at their systems as a bedrock.

I'm talking about the freelance talent which is vital to the future of DS. A 3+ hour feature I just completed switched from DS to Adrenaline HD. The main reason besides cost was the system could be utilized by many more editors. Even though it was painful trying to work through the 500 effects shots (along with random restarts, memory errors and crashed hard drives) it was still enough of a benefit to the producers to go forward. In a market the size of Los Angeles you would think there would be a greater talent pool available. Since all of the top talent (Todd, Gus, Tony etc.) have been snatched up by facilities. That leaves a small pool of freelancers available to handle all of the work coming through. Great for me, Marc and the handful of freelance Nitris editors but it could become a big problem when Symphony Nitris releases. Sure the animatte, Spectramatte and general editing is slow and painful, but hey I can easily find editors to run the system.

Then again maybe it's time for me to learn FCP.
