2 sequences, different aspect ratios?

I'm working on a spot that was shot HD16x9 but edited in 4x3 (digitizing 
a center cut). Now the client wants to see the spot in 16x9 and compare 
the two. So I can't simply purge and redig because I want to keep the 
4x3. I tried to export an edl to make a new project but curiously, I'm 
not getting video on the edl. The edl has a  note that "V1 is in EDL 
'master V1.edl with time span of ..." Yes, everything is on one layer. 
Any suggestions? Is there something simple I'm missing?
