This is just what I've heard from various facilities as I freelance around town, from the operators themselves. You're right though, it often comes down to operators. My point was that all of the bitching and complaints about how DS is not enough like an MC/Symphony are coming from MC/Symphony editors. The young kids (including Walter) running FCP are quite happy to try something new.

Your neck of the woods may be  different, the perception in L.A. is that FCP is great as an offline system but for online work you need something more powerful and reliable. Maybe the system is great and I just have to get the opportunity to run one, but I have to go with what my clients want. My current job was offlined on FCP, I'll be sure and ask the offline editor and the director why they didn't just finish on the same box. As soon as I have an answer I'll post back here.

Rick do you know of other features that onlined on FCP? Seriously I'd love to know as I've only ever heard of "Cold Mountain". I'ts been quite some time and they must have done something else since. If not do you know why? Is it just perception?

Sorry to be late once again on this thread (which by the way is like a booger that won't flick)
but I have to disagree with the following post:

Then again maybe it's time for me to learn FCP. From what I've been told by various facilities it may be slow and buggy. . .
It is NOT SLOW and it is NOT BUGGY.  Mine has been up for the last 6 months and
if you play by the rules, solid as a rock.  Also, wonder how Walter Murch would like
being referred to as a FCP kid.

Take my advice and learn FCP, then make your judgements.  I use it ( and my DS) in 100% supervised sessions every week.  Ironically, I was in a DS session last week since the FCP was booked.  My client really liked an effect I had done the month before in FCP using Live Type.  During lunch break, I sneaked in to our FCP suite, created a couple of Live Type effects and exported Quicktimes with alpha, after lunch break, I imported them into DS and my client was thrilled. ( BTW, footage for session was shot on 35mm film, transfered to Digi Beta ) so it's NOT low end.

FCP is NOT even close to DS, but give it time.  Plus, I am having a blast shopping for my new Boxster S.
