Were you using one of their fibre channel systems? If so, which one, specifically?

Thanks,
Matt

We were successfully using a Huge raid system on one of our DS Equinox systems. Worked just fine. Quit using it when we did an upgrade and Avid "forced" us to by Avid storage.

I just finished with a VERY disappointing phone call with Avid support. In a nutshell, I have a broken media dock 160 that is 1 month out of warranty that Avid support refuses to support. They don't have any more chassis to sell me, let alone replace it with even if I was within warranty. It stinks, especially since I have about 600 GB of data on the drives (which, I believe, are still intact - just the chassis has gone south) and clients waiting. On top of that, I was led to believe that a replacement part was already on the way as of EOD yesterday, only to be told this morning that nothing has actually shipped because there is nothing to ship. Ah!

So, what are my options for storage solutions? I'm thinking that I'll probably NEVER buy another Avid media dock after what happened with support today, but aside from that I've always had some reservations about it anyway (lack of hardware RAID support always seemed a bit stupid to me).

Anyway, I'm after something has the following characteristics:

1. Attach to our existing DS Equinox (Compaq Evo8000) setup without great difficulty
2. Has true hardware RAID support (I would like to run RAID 5 for the protection)
3. Not be so expensive as to make this a pointless exercise
4. Has a recommendation from someone on this list who actually uses it with a DS in a busy edit suite for uncompressed standard def video
5. Has immediate availability

In the meantime, I've been told that the only way I'm going to find a replacement for our media dock chassis is if someone trades a system in for a Nitris upgrade or if a reseller happens to have one. If any resellers out there have one, I would love to talk to you off-list ASAP.

I am interested in either purchasing another media dock 160 chassis outright or renting one for a day or two to copy the data off the drives and switch to a new storage system.

I thank you all in advance for any thoughts you might have on the situation and what my options might be.

Busted and disgusted,
Matt

PS--Before anyone asks: Yes, the data on the drives is all replaceable from tape. But, it would take DAYS to replace it all that way, plus all the render caches.

PSS--The drive sleds/modules are not compatible with other media dock systems that Avid *currently* supports (I know because I asked). :-(

PSSS--Yes, I have assurance, but it doesn't help in this case. Our media dock only had a 3 year warranty. We had it replace two years ago, but the warranty doesn't reset, only lasting from the original purchase date (our DS system was purchased 3 years and 1 month ago).
