(There are 2 sides to every story and I don't know the exact details behind this story but felt like I should chime in... being a freelancer myself.)

If the first job goes long because of changing deadlines or client based errors; then it's the first clients job to book a new artist to finish the project.

If the job goes long because of errors caused by the freelancer then it's the job of the freelancer to:
1. Fix the first job and find a good replacement person for the second job.
2. Find a good replacement person to fix the errors and work the second job.
3. If #1 and #2 are not done. Pay all costs for backing out within 24 hours.

I have a question.  Suppose this person had shown up for the two weeks you booked him for.  Then, on the last day, your client decides everything is garbage and wants to spend another week re-working large portions of the project.  Your editor says, "sorry, I'm booked."   How would you feel about him then?

I'm not defending this person or what he did to you, I'm just asking...

But how do you really feel?

Judging from Tom's reply, this freelancer made the mistake of booking things too closely together.  He needs to refund at least the plane ticket and he should be trying to help secure a replacement (he surely knows other editors of his calibur).

Tom,

At minimum the scumbag that canceled at the last minute owes you the expenses you spent on the job. If he gave you less than 24 hours notice, bill him for every penny. Also, publishing his name on this site would surely seal his fate in the industry.

Sorry it happened to you.

Regards,

Gary

Hey all,

If you hire a freelancer, they agree to do THREE WEEKS of work, you book and pay for the flight and hotel, then the day said Freelancer is to fly in, they call and cancel, how does everyone feel about if the freelancer owes me for the flight and hotel?

Let alone the fact that now I’m down an editor for the next few weeks. Which brings me to my next question, I need a freelancer. InFarmington Hills,MI(Northwest ofDetroit) Starting Monday Sept. 12th thru Friday Sept. 23rd.  You MUST be able to heavily composite and edit. DS v5 and v7.5.  As a bonus note, we are looking to hire, so if things work out and you feel like trying out the life of a staffer, this could work out nicely for you.

Please respond off list.

Thanks. Sorry for the rant. Just not feeling the love.

Tom

Also, I would consider it good business to a call someone you are canceling on and discuss the matter, so dear freelancer, please be so kind as to call me ASAP.
