In DS it's not exactly realtime, but turn on Autokey (the key in the lower right or the 'auto' button by the key in an effect's property panel), select your effect (like a DVE) and while parked at the begining, hit Control-up arrow. The timeline will start playing slightly slower than realtime at which point you can drag around the DVE like you normally would while parked, and DS will drop in keyframes as you go. This works for most animatable properties, by dragging the value sliders, etc.
