Hello Scott,
Be sure that the actual start frame from the zpic sequence is the frame
number you entered in the external data>frame range start, i.e. if the
zpics start with picturename.41.zpic you must enter 41 in the box. Also,
be sure that the zpic resolution matches the XSI image resolution.
I usually do initial testing with the more visually obvious fog effect,
just to see if the data can be read OK.
As a workaround, you can generate a separate pass in XSI with constant
white material for every 3D object and a opaque black depth-fading to
give you a "depth matte" that can be used as a mask for a blur in DS.
