Well, in all my time in the industry, I have never even considered holding a Master Reel, so I don't know how that would fly these days.  Besides, what would the DS freelancer do, walk away with the Nitris hardware until a check is cut?  I can see the client now:  "Sure, take the master, we'll just take the tape cost out of your day rate and get some monkey to output us a new master."  Good luck working with them again.  Our industry is built largely on trust and reputation.  Taking certain precautions and knowing who you are dealing with should  keep most individuals out of trouble.
