The most expensive part is not buying the system, it's beeing able to keep it up to date that is expensive. As I have stated a few years ago, my calculations show that it costs about 50.000 dollars per year to keep it updated, with new software, support and every few years new hardware.

*Perhaps what we should expect from Avid isn't to expound on the tools they already have, but to drop the price for what already exists. Avid painted DS into a corner when it found a niche for it in the marketplace over the last few years, that being greatly used as a conform tool. They sold many systems for this one purpose in mind. Those that bought it for it's promising 3D capability or future expansions of its' toolset were simply lied to. They abandoned the 3D environment, tracking elements, source generators, graphics tool, and anything else that would help the product compete with the companies that excel in these areas.*
** *So I guess the big question is: What should be the fair and going rate for a DS Nitris as it stands now? $50K? $60K? Certainly not more than $100K. Nowhere close. Should the price point of DS drop to these levels, then it's user base would accept it's limitations and make it easier to stomach using 3rd party tools to do what DS does not. It's Avid's unwillingness to compromise with it's customers that make them so unlikeable. Their software price is not justified, their support price is not justifiable and it's proprietary hardware price (ie. Storage) is hugely unjustifiable. And the biggest joke of it all is that if you deviate from any of this, it all becomes 'Unsupported'. Hence, the strength of this list.*
** *Scott is certainly right that Avid's main focus these days is the newsroom. They are like pigs wallowing in sh*t when it comes to the amount of product they can dump off on these cash cows.*
** *Sadly.*
