Hello All,
Although this will address the current "Avid In Focus" thread, I am so excited, I had to start my own.
Today, I signed a contract on a brand new Nitris with 1.75TB of storage. The reason I did this is both
complicated and simple. Many of you know me as an "old timer" who started on DS Ver 1 while it was
still a Softimage product. My current system is going on 7 years old and at Ver 3.01. My DS is one
of the main reasons that I am still in business today. It has served me and my clients without fail and
in 7 years, I have only lost 2 of the 9gig media drives in my RAID. ( Left on except for hurricanes )
The decision to jump back in has been agonizing, but now, as before, I know that I have made the right
decision. I realize that there has been much grumbling and mumbling lately about the future of DS and
to tell you the truth, it has gone in one ear and out the other. Especially if it comes from folks who have
never had to reach into their very own pocket and cough up the sizable investment that a DS requires.
Now I will admit, I listened very intently to other boutique owners like myself to gauge the real world shortcomings.
I gleaned some very valuable information OFF the DS list from others like myself. As a business owner / operator,
I have realistic expectations about what my ROI should be and for me, the DS ( even in its current form ) is a no brainer.
I explored all other options out there and have even added a FCP HD room to my shop, but when push comes
to shove, there is NOTHING that can compete as a single solution to what the DS offers. The FCP is a great little box for
many things, but in my opinion, it is merely "cute". I will be the first to admit that I am not the type of cutter who does
much extreme effects work as many of you, so in that respect, you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.
We typically farm out those effects and concentrate on the post supervision and conform. But for me, having this
kind of horsepower, with the AVID name and the ability to migrate to HD is the only logical solution.
I am excited about the future and can only say that no matter what many may think, it is my firm belief that AVID
is a smart company, would NEVER abandon DS and the future of DS and all of its users is bright.
I am allowed to say that as I have just put my money where my mouth is, with cash.
So in closing, I hope I didn't tick anyone off too much with this thread as I will be asking a whole lot of
dumb questions ( RTMF ) in the weeks to come. Perhaps I should subscribe as a newbie with a new name.
DS dandelion...............nawh.
My dear old Betsy ( Intergraph GT-1 ) will enjoy a well deserved retirement in our tape library printing labels. I may even give
her internet access which she was always deprived of. That dear old girl has never let me down.
A very excited,
Rick at naked eye
( And no, I have not been drinking any Kool-Aid )
