Tri-Level Sync Purpose?

What is the purpose of Tri-Level Sync? Is it used during capture and 
output only or only output?

I am starting a 1080i/59.94 project with both DS Nitris and an HD 
Adrenaline. I have Tri-Level on the Nitris but have never fully 
understood the purpose. Also, I am wondering if I need it for the 
Adrenaline. My HD sources are HDcam 1080i--final master to HDcam.
