Tri-Level sync is a more accurate video reference in HD because it uses
three sync steps: zero, black and burst.
There is better documentation on this topic if you Google but basically
you MUST use Tri-Level sync with any non-standard interlaced and all
progressive formats. You also must use the correct Tri-levels sync for
specific frame rates.
A standard Black Burst can be used if you work at 29.97 (or 25 PAL).

Subject: Tri-Level Sync Purpose?
What is the purpose of Tri-Level Sync? Is it used during capture and
output only or only output?
I am starting a 1080i/59.94 project with both DS Nitris and an HD
Adrenaline. I have Tri-Level on the Nitris but have never fully
understood the purpose. Also, I am wondering if I need it for the
Adrenaline. My HD sources are HDcam 1080i--final master to HDcam.
