Hello Ken,

To add to Andi's comments, purchasing a identical array with similar drives (I'm guessing from your post that you presently have the Ultra320), it would be possible (but to my knowledge NOT officially supported) to take six drives out of the 12 existing ones and exchange them for 6 of the new array. You could then have two separate 12-drives striped sets spread across two chassis, hence allowing a dual-bus connection to both sets and retaining the optimal 2-streams real-time HD that you presently have.

This use to be an old Mediadock LVD trick and I never tried it myself, but I believed several users did so successfully... Brandon Bussinger had a documented exchange with support to that effect a while ago, which can be found here:

Hope this helps

Ken,
there are others who know storage things better than me but simply stated, the drives all work together as one - hence the speed. To get full speed from your Nitris it is important that you have at least 12 drives made into a stripe set. Adding drives, you could opt for another stripe set of 12 new drives - less drives will not give you the speed needed for the real time effects, or you could I suppose add more drives to the original 12 - but then you would have to get exactly the same brand and type of drives and restripe them all together (meaning deleting everything on them). I'm sure others can fill in with more detailed information.

We are in the middle of a project and need to up our storage. 1080p 23.98 Uncompressed 10bit. We presently have one 12 bay chassis with 12 146 Gig Drives. Can we add another chassis with 6 or 8 drives or do we have to add another 12 drives? Also, what are the chances that we can mix a 3rd Party drive manufacture chassis and drives (such as Kingston Storcase) with our current Avid drive configuration?
Thanks
KEN
