Howard,
to my knowledge there still is no standard in Europe yet, we are still
in an infant stage where the first HD channel has been broadcasting for
9 months now and others are just starting theirs. Roumor tells me that
BBC has opted for 1080i and here our main channel are still talking
about 720. There are no generally "legal" or "unlegal" standards yet -
it seems more dependent on each individual broadcast company.

For quite a while there was talk that the EU would not recognize 720P
as "High Def" because it is only a few more lines than PAL and the
thinking was that it had to be much better than standard def to allow
it to be called HD. Well since so many programs are converted up and
down how was that enforceable?
Is it "legal" in a EU nation to call a production High Def if it was
shot and finalized in 720 but then upconverted to 1080, 50 or 60?
Whatever happened on this issue?
