So to animate a shape change, the standard is to hit the master keyframe button, or will autokey work well if I start deforming the shape?

Andi: Yes

To see certain things in the animation editor: go to view and select "filters" then "edit filters" to add filters.

I was trying to get the filters to work. what conditions does the filter test for? Meaning the value of the keyframes or the name of each parameter? What would I put in the filter boxes to get it to only show the few parameters that have any keys on them? I tried 'doesn't contain' -> 0. But that just killed everything.

Andi: I don't know how to find only the ones with keys. On the left hand you have a drop down box with choices and in the right hand box you can add x, y, rotate or other choices. On the very bottom you'l find a large help button. There you will probably find more exact answers.
