Title: Re: secondary color correction
While I’m up for many of the improvements DS CC needs, I really don’t think DS (or flame, or inferno, or smoke or iQ  ... etc.) will ever be a DaVInci or it should be a DaVinci for hat matter since that’s not what the box is built for.
Are all the tools there for us to use and achieve the same result? Sure they are! But DS is not and will not be a grading only tool ... and of course something like DaVinci or Lustre or whatever will always do a much “smoother” job of grading since that’s the only thing those boxes are designed for, I’d be worried if DaVinci did not do a better job then DS ... as always, “horses for courses”.

Having said that, DS does need many improvements to it’s color correction and grading set of tools, better integration, more options ... etc. As far as dynamic range goes, with 16 and 32 bit in DS you have more then you’ll ever know what to do with and at par with any grading tool out there ... the only advantage is when going straight from film since you are using the celluloid as source and not the crappy dynamic range of tape source (HD or SD).

I.

p.s. “Proper” secondary color correction would be something from Color Warper in flame/inferno, or Anvil’s Hue Correct, hey, I’d be happy with Shake’s Hue Curves ...

What you are missing out on, at least compared to a DaVinci is ease of
operation and speed. The dedicated UI of the DaVinci and big hardware to
allow silky smooth (read no jumping on minute adjustments) broad range
(read always in 16 bit, maybe 24 bit space) and a job specific designed
control surface. And that goes for more than just the secondaries !!

These are what the colorist here tell me. After color correcting a
handful of HD shows on the Nitris while waiting for our DaVinci 2K. They
won't come back.
