I do nit think this case is related to that, it sound more to me like a
limit of being working in a 32 bit environment. Check how much memory the DS
is using at that moment when you have that error. If it is close to the 1.7
GB you will have to reduce the amount of clips or complexity of you
sequence. (at least that is my experience)

I have had a lot of memory problems like that until Sylvain shouted at 
me to fix my graphic card settings. It has to be set to DS display. 
Hopefully DS runs better now. So it is important that for the memory use 
that the display is set right. To be checked at:
rightclick on Desktop, properties, settings, advanced, configuration and 
make sure Avid DS is selected in the list.
