I think this is short sighted. First of all, Avid didn't buy Pinnacle
for the editing products. It is however very welcome to the owners of
Pinnacle editing systems that Avid is maintaining their products, very
much like it used to be with Softimage Digital Studio. Yes the Pinnacle
HDV codec is in use by Avid, because it is a very good codec. There are
other Pinnacle products except for the editing systems that fit well
into Avids product line.
The watering down scenario below is a way for Avid to sell different
products to different markets. What you should concider is if Avid is
making a product that your clients are ready to pay for aswell as paying
for your work. In this case you are probably better off than if
competing on the low end of the market.
The big question today is if Avid is doing enough keeping DS in the lead
of it's competition and if DS is paying back your investment or not.
Everything else (like if Avid is watering down it's line of products) is
nonsens. There simply seems to be a lot of Avid bashing going on in
general because Avid is a dominant system provider.
Do you have use for the tools in DS? Do your clients pay for your
services? What can be changed in DS or of your services for the better,
that is what I think this kind of discussions should be about, nothing else.
(except for Antlers,Poutine and other exciting things in life)

Ya know...the description below is the biggest seller (to ME) for
learning/purchasing FCP. I have been avoiding RE-learning FCP (used
it back in the day...v1.2) for many reasons, but after reading Scott's
description of WHAT you can purchase to do whatever flavor of editing,
it only makes sense to invest in FCP.
I want to say it's a shame...but I think it's because I feel (now)
that Avid really is watering down their product instead of bringing
them together.
wow. (shock AND awe...with disgust mixed in)
