Addendum (after sleeping on it): (it's kinda long, sorry again...)
Please don't take my previous rant as a knock on Liquid Chrome. It's
a fine system in it's own right, and Pinnacle did a great job
developing it. I am just a bit disappointed in Avid. They're turning
into Microsoft - instead of in-house R&D they'll wait for a smaller
company to come up with something innovative / useful and just buy it
and slap their name on it. Much like Microsoft did with Giant and the
(now Microsoft) AntiSpyware program. (Which is phenomenal, btw.)
I had a recent discussion where it hit me: One of my former employers
still has an AMP (Avid Media Processor), a dedicated box that ran
MacOS 8.0 (I think) and Media Composer 5.5 at its height. We're
talking early 90s tech here. If I fired up that MC 5.5, easily 10
years old, and put it next to a brand-spanking new $90k Symphony
Nitris - what has changed, interface/menu wise? Look/Feel wise? ...
SuperBin? a few more import/export options? A seperate color
correction layout? Not a tremendous amount. Continuity is great, but
not when it stifles innovation.
Now, is FCP the panacea for our editorial woes? Yes and No. Apple is
definitely throwing R&D behind it, and v.5 is a substantial
improvement. With the right hardware setup and operator, Motion can
do some things in a matter of seconds that would take any other system
hours. The Round-Tripping concept is somewhat kludgy, although it is
getting much better.
The reason I'm going to FCP as much as possible (although, as a
freelancer, I can't be too choosy, and would have a DS over anything
else =) ) - the reason philosophically that I'm so much more 'behind'
Apple and FCP is that over the past 4 years, I've seen constant
*innovation* - from all aspects: hardware, software, usability,
interface, "coolness". From Avid I haven't seen it. Sure, DNA
hardware is amazing, but where's my SDI Mojo? You have one of the
best dev teams in the world at your disposal in Montreal, and you
force them to cobble on a MC-esque interface? It's like their customer
base is this 800lb. gorilla they're afraid to upset. Yet but not
upsetting anyone they're going to lose everyone.
Anyway, I'll go back to lurking now, I don't want to cause a riot or
bring people down. Hey, my Redskins are 5-3 and 2nd in the NFC East!
Thanks,

Personally I don't give a frog's fat a$$ whether that app runs on
Mac or Windows or Linux or Unix or Amiga, and I don't care what
the interface looks like. At some point we all had to learn the
systems we now work on…
The clients pay to get their projects done. Most don't care what
system it's finished on, just that it's finished and on time.
Will I try to sit down at a Chrome HD and give it a go? You bet I
will.
Will I report my impressions here for better or worse? Absolutely.

OK, so who's going to jump with us? ship that is. paul and i have
had this discussion, as i'm sure several of you have, about the
real reason why FCP isn't the mainstay in most places.. if you
don't already know, then do some research. i would love to see
that fact change, cause frankly, i am getting tired of making
excuses, esp whenit's always being compared to FCP or , like the
previous email from scott, just about everything else does
everything else.
Argh!!!! (in the flavor of charlie brown missing the football, again!)

Ya know...the description below is the biggest seller (to ME) for
learning/purchasing FCP. I have been avoiding RE-learning FCP
(used it back in the day...v1.2) for many reasons, but after
reading Scott's description of WHAT you can purchase to do
whatever flavor of editing, it only makes sense to invest in FCP.
I want to say it's a shame...but I think it's because I feel (now)
that Avid really is watering down their product instead of
bringing them together.
wow. (shock AND awe...with disgust mixed in)
