It is probably the same, but the difference that no custom size project will
give you a HD realtime proxy to work with. So you will have to work all
without the chance to realtime play to a monitor. Also render in 4K is
extremely slow compared to a 2K or HD one. So working with a HD proxy is
very handy. You can let the machine rendering in 4K overnight when you
finished. My advice, if you are going to work 4K, be careful with the
plugins you use, all is going to render OK in the HD proxy mode, but be sure
to watch a few frames of the full 4K render before go home. I had the bad
experience to hit memory limitations and get full garbage noise as a final
render.

Along those same lines...
Client is bringing in a 1080p/23.98 sequence to finish and needs it
output at 4K.
Is there any difference between doing a custom file size output in
the HD project and bringing that sequence into a 4K project and doing
the file export in there?
In my limited tests the results seem the same.
