I'd do an archive as well, just in case software upgrades
in-between. You can restore the archive then drag the media onto the
drives (or the other way around) and DS will see the media and link up to
it.
Or, better still, use the file-based archive tool which was
made specifically for the purpose. http://www3.softimage.com/DS2/right/download/utils/current/DSAB_Install.zip

yes you can - but - it´s not suported (i have done it a few weeks ago when i
re-configured my video storage)

yes - don´t upgrade your software until you open it the next time ....
