Awhile back, someone had posted a help message whereby they
inadvertently hit a button and could not see any video play or hear
audio scrub and it was a simple icon on the monitor somwhere.

I seem to have hit that button. What was that again.

There are two; Down at the lower right of the right monitor, there is a speaker icon which turns on/off audio scrubbing, and to the right of that one that lokos like a monitor (a black square) which turns the viewer updating off.

Secondly, while looking for that mysterious button, I notice that my
DMS brokering icon is grey.

What is this and do I need it?

If you're not running RP, just ignore it. If you have an RP, it will light up in the center to show that it's sending jobs to the DMS broker when you send a job off to process; it'll also open the DMS Broker administration tool if you click it (but again, unless you're even running a DMS Broker somewhere, it won't do anything)

OK I lied, a third. My audio guy ( Pro Tools ) is asking why I don't
want my audio at 24 bit now that I have DS. I seem to recall issues
when making Quicktimes and AVI's if the audio is 24 bit. Could
someone refresh my atom sized brain why this is so and should
I be working at 24 bit. If I do, what is the workaround to make QT
and AVI's.

QTs seem to make 16-bit audio, but AVIs do 24-bit. To make it 16, just make a new sequence with 16-bit audio and drag your 24-bit sequence into it, and export from that instead.

As to why to work in 24, the truth is that most people wouldn't notice or could hear the difference... and it's really only particularly important when you're actually mixing (think about it visually, like compositing in 8 versuses 16 bit.. you have a much bigger range).
