I don't think we have any real
worries at this point. I believe that Avid is a ways away from actually
releasing a Symphony-Nitris. They're having pretty massive problems that
relate to the operating system. Since the DS is completely tied to Windows,
they're having considerable problems porting it to software that runs in an
operating system that is not Windows.

This may seem a bit blunt but I would not even spend $20K on
such a
system until we see if DS still exists as a distinct product after
NAB
2006. Avid is staying completely silent on the subject.. We shall see.
I
certainly hope that the DS brand and philosophy does not cease to
exist.
A re-write of the system is OK but not if it loses its many
good
distinctives.

We've had this discussion before friends:
How many of you
would buy a $10k 'software only' version of DS. Or even
a
$20k compositing
station as a COMPLEMENT to DS? Basically a DS without a
Nitris BOB that could
be used for compositing and cutting mattes etc.
Media would have to be
ingested on the DS Nitris and would be shared the
same way RP media is
shared. You wouldn't be able to do much with this
station without a DS Nitris
as 'big brother' except with file based
material
which honestly DS ain't
so compelling for...
I might even $30k if they included the HP
workstation/video card combo.
Plus
for me I'd have to buy a Unity seat for
each one I got...Avid could make
MORE MONEY from me AND MAKE ME HAPPIER AT
THE SAME TIME...
Offer a $50k version with Audio/Video OUTPUT only and
I'd buy that
too...
