We recently finished up work on the series "Over There" for Steven Bochco /
FX.
Creating realistic muzzle flashes and explosions were a big part of the
finishing process. We were very lucky in post, that the on set production
team often used blank ammo so the guns often emitted real flashes. Early in
the series, I captured a bunch of stills of these flashes. When muzzle
flashes needed to be added, it was a simple matter of HSL keying the
appropriate flash and resizing / repositioning it with a DVE. Often I would
enhance the flashes with a little "Glow" from Sapphire. Each flash took no
more than a minute to build and render.

well. The flashes from the guns on set were yellow orange and lasted usually
one, sometimes two frames.

Subject: muzzle flashes
I need to create a muzzle flash on the Nitris. The raw footage shot
contains a guy holding a gun, pretending to fire it and it looks like they
flashed him several times with a strobe light or camera flash. Do I need to
buy keyable muzzle flashes (if so, where) or can I just create a muzzle
flash using the graphics tool or some type of plug in directly on the
Nitris? How many frames should each blast last? Do I need to add smoke?
What color and shape should the flash be? Any pointers would be very
appreciated!
