HD video in an SD Sequence

Hello DS-land;

I think I am missing something basic here.  Any help would be
appreciated.

Here's the basics:  I have a shot from HDcam (1080i) of a wide shot of a
set.  I capture the HD shot and also the downconverted SD (from a Sony
F500 deck).  

In an SD sequence I lay in the downconverted shot, which looks great.
Then I "cut" to the HD shot to produce a "close-up" of the same shot.
No DVE, just the HD shot with Media Conversion set to Center-No Scale
option.

The problem is the "close-up" looks very soft.  Technically, there is no
scaling going on here, I would think.  Just a 720 x 486 "cut" of the HD
shot in an SD frame.

Any idea what is going on here?  I am sure I tested this before and it
worked OK.
