As far as I know, DVE does NOT do the RGB conversion dance. But then how would you know? There is no grand list of what does or does not go do that dance available in the doc. Every time I have asked for one, the answer has been why do you need to know? (Shades of Quantel).

Well, I thought the same thing. So I tried a completely different shot

but I still see the problem.

Now, though, I've noticed something else. If NO effect is applied to
the HD clip, when brought into an SD sequence, the shot (which has an
apparent blow-up, since this is an SD cut of an HD shot) looks nice and
sharp.

But, if ANY effect is applied, which causes a YUV-RGB conversion, like a
DVE or a simple Color Correct, the picture immediately goes soft, even
if no parameter changes are made. If an effect which does not require a
conversion, like a Graphics effect, is applied, no softness occurs.

Hmmm... interesting. Any thoughts on what the heck is going on here?
I think we're getting close!

Hi Ed -

Just tried basically the same thing, and the only time I got any
softness
was when the HD shot was slightly out of focus. On an HD monitor it
looked
fine, the SD downconvert looked great, but the "close-up" of the HD on
an SD
timeline looked soft. Could this be the problem?

Subject: HD video in an SD Sequence

Hello DS-land;

I think I am missing something basic here. Any help would be
appreciated.

Here's the basics: I have a shot from HDcam (1080i) of a wide shot of

a

set. I capture the HD shot and also the downconverted SD (from a Sony
F500 deck).

In an SD sequence I lay in the downconverted shot, which looks great.
Then I "cut" to the HD shot to produce a "close-up" of the same shot.
No DVE, just the HD shot with Media Conversion set to Center-No Scale
option.

The problem is the "close-up" looks very soft. Technically, there is

no

scaling going on here, I would think. Just a 720 x 486 "cut" of the

HD

shot in an SD frame.

Any idea what is going on here? I am sure I tested this before and it
worked OK.

Thanks!
