Come on, guys, you're scaring the kids!

David, obviously you've had some bad experiences with customer perception of FCP vs DS, as well as some bad experience editing on a FCP system. Rick, it seems, has not shared your experiences. What he has had (and still continues to) is a FCP suite with which he's been able to successfully edit videos and make money! It certainly isn't his first choice, otherwise he wouldn't have shelved ol' betsy and bought a shiny new nitris, but it must be appropriate for at least some of his work. You might want to read Rick's initial reply to Chris Smith regarding FCP as his choice.

Rick was just answering the hypothetical question of what he would use if DS suddenly wasn't available. He wasn't evangelizing for FCP, wasn't running down any other system, and wasn't even saying he wanted to do that. Simply that for his market and his client base that would be his editing system of choice if the DS was pulled from the market. And if history is any precedent, and he still keeps his new DS for seven years without any upgrades before he replaces it, FCP will surely be a totally different beast.

While this is the DS-L, users have always been free to discuss their opinions of the DS, both positive and negative, as well as their opinions of other systems. I certainly hope this will never change, because I've learned more from other people on this list than I've ever learned from the reviews in the magazines, and I've been well prepared to do comparisons at product demonstrations and at the NAB.

Let's keep the list open to everyone without fear of having their opinion attacked. That's not what this list is about.

This is a great forum for sharing views and experiences and is called the DS-L.  If you really want to tout the virtues of a system that I dislike (not for what it can do well, but for the misperception of paying clients that it is equal to DS and therefore a DS owner should charge the same amount as a FCP owner), then please preach to the Choir and generate a ground swell on a FCP user group.

I am not sure why you felt you had to attack my words personally, when all the while, I was merely grinding at the FCPro-sumer system.

BTW, I have worked on a FCP HD system many times as a favour to an associate who unfortunately was misinformed and ended up purchasing one.  I only speak on issues I have experience and it is impolite to infer otherwise.  My opinions may be wrong, but they are not ignorant.

Here is the text from the original post:

If not DS...

Worst case scenario.  Let's say that DS gets end-of lifed or goes in a
direction that doesn't help your company/workflow/bottom line or otherwise
becomes a system with no future for you.   To which systems will you move?

To which I replied my FCP scenario as the system I would move to.  NOT comparing

costs nor capabilites.

Then drowe(at)ctv.ca continued:

not âwhat is a low end, price reduced, knock off NLEâ.

To which I now reply:  You OBVIOUSLY have never cut on an FCP system because if you had,

you would realize that it may or may not be many things, but IT IS CERTAINLY NOT a "low end,

price reduced NLE".

I will leave you with that kind sir.

Rick at nakedeye
