I am beginning to think this has nothing to do with DVE interpolation,
but rather YUV-RGB conversion, instead.
If a couple of folks get the chance to try this sometime, it would be
nice to know the results you get:
-Capture a 1080i HD shot.
-Open an SD sequence and drag the shot into the timeline.
(Use the "Original Size and Position" option for media conversion.)
The section of the HD shot you see should look fairly sharp and clean.
-Apply ANY RGB effect preset; DVE, Color Correct, Crop, whatever.
-Compare the shot from before the effect was applied.
When I do this the shot goes very soft, immediately, with no parameter
changes to the effect.
Maybe this is an Equinox-thing? It would interesting to see if this
occurs on Nitris-equipped systems.

As far as I know, DVE does NOT do the RGB conversion dance. But then
how would you know? There is no grand list of what does or does not go
do that dance available in the doc. Every time I have asked for one,
the answer has been why do you need to know? (Shades of Quantel).
