Title: 4K Advice

Oh yes….  Specially when you switch to 4K to render and each frame takes like 30 seconds to render…. At least that gives me time to get a coffee… and a doughnut, and a steak, and a cake, and go home… sleep… and come back next day and see what do I have to change… hehe

I’ve work with 4K DPX recently, I don’t think you will ever play 4K files, not even in a 8200, only HD proxy you can play to a monitor, some one correct me if I’m wrong. Just have in mind that there is not a lot that you will be able to do at 4K because the XP 2 GB memory limit. So if you just have to conform, that would work fine, but if you have to create a complex compositing, have in mind that when you are working with the HD proxy, things would be fast, and will look OK, but when you have to render the final ver. be careful, because things can look different, specially if you are using plugins, some of them do not work very well in 4K and some things can reach the 2 GB limit and start to render garbage on every frame.

If you use tiff files or dpx files, the resolution is the same, so the real difference will be the color depth, if it is 8, 16 or 32 float, forget to work in 4k 32 float. 16 bits.. may be.. if you don’t use a lot of nodes or layers.. if you got DPX files, I would stay using them to avoid any change in the original files.

Just my little experience with 4K DPX files…….

Subject: 4K Advice

Hello Everyone in looking for advice,

I have  a project coming up that will be using scanned 4K source material. We are currently on DS Nitris 7.5 (QFE4) HP8000, and from what I’ve gathered linking to DPX files will not be an option without upgrading to 7.6 and the machine to a HP8200. And even then, I can’t seem to find out if the DS would be able to play them. 2K seems okay, 4K seems a little grey.

In light of this I’m considering having all the scans done to TIFF instead, knowing that I’ll have to capture everything, and that I might need to get an AE station involved. Does anyone with experience working in 4K and have any suggestions for workflow? Any downsides to using TIFF over DPX?

Much appreciated,

Troy
