We just delivered a show to Sci Fi and I'm sure it would have been
kicked if we did a downconvert output from the DS. We output to D5
and the color correction and downconverts were done from that master.
It would probably be less expensive to hire a deck and output to HD
and do your downconverts from that master through a standards
converter than to just hire the standards converter to go out to Digi.
We haven't compared the DNxHD downconvert to the Uncompressed HD
downconvert, but my first thought is that it would still be soft and
there wouldn't be much difference in the downconvert. You might try
generating a test pattern, output to a file sequence, and bring it
back in using DNxHD compression and compare the two sources, but
that's just in theory.

<excerpt>Happy Saturday to all;
With all this talk about DNxHD and the superb quality......Has anyone
compared the SD downconverts from DNxHD codec (1080Psf 23.976) and
Uncompressed HD ??
I had done a couple of quick tests and they BOTH look good.....Are
they acceptable though??
Along the same lines.....How 'bout the DNxHD or (uncompressed HD)
downconvert out of the nitris compared to a finish in HD out to tape
and then downconverted?? Since we don't have an HD deck in house to
lay off to....I am unable to test these.....anyone......
Bottom line...Is the SD downconvert out of the nitris acceptable to
networks???
I've got a job I'm working on with a tight budget and are looking to
NOT rent an HD record deck...just go out SD to digi-beta....
Always comes down to "You get what you pay for" ;).
Guess I have nothing better to do today....sad eh??
