It can be simpler than that.
Either have the final sequence opened in the timeline or
selected in the DS Explorer, then Select "Except For" and select what you need
to be purged (video, audio, caches, etc.).
One important option is "Maximum Recovery".
Why? Because only this option will split the full master media in smaller
pieces used by sub-clips and purge the master media when finished. Note
that this process requires a lot of media handling and will take some time to
complete as copies of the sub-clip media must be made on the storage before
deleting the master media. And you need ample space on your storage for
this as well.

Russ, you said to subclip my larger clip then purge unused media. My
30 second bit is used in effects trees as a plate and is chopped up on the
layer's timeline. I was hoping there would be a simple way to do what I
need to keep what I used and delete the rest. If I subclip it like you
suggested do I have to subclip from the original clip then manually re apply it
in the effects tree and recut it up on the timeline?
If this is the case, in the future should I do ALL editing that I may not
recapture bits of as subclips so I can archive easier?

Currently, they do not have a file conversion utility. As far as paring down your media to transfer, you can purge the compresed video, and to preserve the 30 seconds of the 7 minute clip, make a supbclip of the 30 seconds and then purge unused media of the 7 minute clip.Russ----- Original Message -----Sent: Thursday, December 22, 2005 12:35 PMSubject: Re: Archive Questionsouch. I can't help but think they offer conversion utility or backwards compatible file types , no?

Chris -You have to be aware, too, that the media files that Archive Backup copies will only be good as long as Avid keeps the media file format the same. Usually when there's a major upgrade, as in from 7.6 to 8.0, the file format changes and the media files cannot be converted. Unless our friends up in Montreal are working on that, too???Russ----- Original Message -----Sent: Thursday, December 22, 2005 11:55 AMSubject: Re: Archive QuestionsAwesome! Thanks Benoit.

Hello Chris,You might want to take a look at the DS Archive Backup tool on the DS website:It does what you wish the inboard archive tool would do :-)CheersBenoitChris Smith wrote:Thanks Guys. Is it on the wish list anywhere to have DS automatically take anything that is linked or captured and save them onto only disk automatically? I'd rather back everything up onto FW drives or optical media than mess with decks. *Chris Smith**Partner/Film Director**Sugar Film Production**3699 McKinney #222**Dallas 75204**214.655.2662*On Dec 22, 2005, at 8:14 AM, Benoit Melancon wrote:--Benoit MelanconAvid DS ACI/ACSRwww.nadcentre.com---
