Owen, that's given. While recording any VTR derives servo reference from
the incoming video signal when REFERENCE is set to AUTO (the most common
setting). Your solution is one of the ways to address this. Probably the
safest one too. Other methods include switching REFERENCE to EXT REF
provided that the tri-level sync that feeds the VTR is the same one that
feeds the Nitris, or you can leave the REFERENCE in AUTO and feed
another video source to the deck but again, this source must be
synchronous with the Nitris output.

No, that's exactly what I was trying. I had generated black, and only
clicked the audio tracks in the output tool, but it never worked. Only
when I actually told DS to write the (captured) video to tape did it
play down correctly.
