Hi Marc,
I have to say that Phil hit the nail on the head - it's often not about
the tool but the workflow. The workflow throughout the Media Composer
line is pretty smooth and if you need to get the job done it's
something to consider. If you can do 90-95% of the work without leaving
the Media Composer world it may be a very productive approach to send
only the tough effects shots out to
DS/Discreet/AfterEffects/Fusion/Shake when needed.
Please note that I've been a long time supporter of DS (we purchased
the first DS in NYC post) but I'm a greater supporter of my facility
and editors. I'll do what's needed to enable them to keep our clients
happy without any particular allegiance to any manufacturer or
technology.

I'm sure you've read all about the demise of DS...blah blah blah, but if
your Boss is so close minded to not look at different solutions to get the
job done right, how the H**l did he get the position as Post Super? Doesn't
that title mean, "The guy/girl who has to figure out how to get the job done
right, fastest, cheapest"??
Express your concern with your next boss up. Not that you want to be a whiny
little wiener, but if your job is being hindered by someone who seems to
only think of himself..well then..
And on top of that, since you're facility has been taken over by NFL, talk
to those guys. The ones at NFL films in jersey have at least 2 DS systems.
And I don't think their stuff looks bad one bit. (their stuff always looks
freakin awesome).
Just my 2¢, and it burns me up every time I see the guys who've been
grandfathered into the position just because they were there the longest.

Subject: Re: My boss hates DS
Hey John:
I LOVE DS, however, if the vision of the future from your boss is to
have a shared media pool environment from Avid DV to Adrenaline into
Nitris to on air playback - well DS does not play well in this
environment. It is sad to say that NITRIS cannot work in this
collaborative environment seemlessly. This is probably what is
driving the move to PhoneyNITRIS, because NITRIS cannot live in the
collaborative work place of shared media to air. YES, NITRIS can take
the shared media and use it, BUT ONCE TOUCHED BY NITRIS you cannot go
back to other systems, including the play to air.
I was sad to see Avid take the fragmented approach they did at NAB
when Mojo/Adrenaline and NITRIS were introduced. This action was the
death toll for DS NITRIS. Avid should have made EVERTHING ELSE
compatible with DS NITRIS, but they did not and we are in the
predicament we find ourselves today.
I truely hope Avid does not turn their backs on DS NITRIS, for if they
do some 4,000 plus systems are up for grabs, and Avid will not hold on
to these systems or talented artists that use them day to day.
Again, I LOVE MY DS NITRIS - I hope Avid does as well . . .

Last year I took it upon myself to become a DS editor so I could free lance
and possibly get a full time job at a facility that has a DS. Instead I
have wound up doing some free lancing here in town (we only have two
facilities with DS in Charlotte, NC) and also I have been fortunate to have
unlimited access to a DS Nitris through our reseller here in town. I
currently work for NASCAR Images which has recently been taken over by a
bunch of NFL films and FOX guys, so we are having a change of the guards so
to speak and not everyone is cool with that. I quite frankly am excited
about all the changes.
Well our vice president (who is from films) says we are eventually getting a
DS, but my direct boss who is the post production supervisor HATES DS and
says media composer and symphony rule and not to mention DS to him again. I
cannot begin to tell you how much my DS classes have helped me in further
understanding my trade. Even on Media composer and After Effects I now
understand how to work with removing 3:2 pulldowns for graphics and even
editing in 24p which is imperitive since everything we do is on film or HD.
I can't believe all these rumors about avid doing away with DS because of
Symphony Nitris. On symphony and media composer (they are really the same
box, lets face it) there is no composite interface like there is on DS.
That right there sells me on DS because I have to do compositing where I
work and it takes me forever to export quick times to After Effects, and
lets not forget how long it takes for it to render.
Anyway my boss is very hard headed and has worked for NASCAR Images since it
was just a hole in the wall and he does not welcome change. But to my
surprise his boss saw to it that my training expenses were reimbursed. So
hopefully we will have that wonderful DS soon.... Oh...uh...if Avid keeps
making it and we can breathe a sigh of relief and continue doing our work
the way it should be done!
Happy Holidays.
John
