Just to clarify my previous burst of, well... I didn't mean to say that DS
was the best option, or the worst, and yes I agree with Mark Hollis, it
doesn't play well with other. But does do some things better than others.
What I meant was that before buying, look at everything. Avid MC/Symphony
have the name recognition, DS doesn't. Final Cut has name recognition,
Discreet Smoke doesn't. Does that mean I would turn down a job where
everything was going to finish on a smoke/fire system? Or not recommend it
to my boss?
Is it the right tool? For cutting 30 second promos in a small market,
probably not. For doing promos from a live taped event and turning them
around in 30 minutes complete, again, probably not the right tools. But if
you have 8 hours or more to do some creative compositing and really massage
the picture to everyone's liking, then DS or Smoke or Shake are the tools.
And just cause someone can complete 4 yrs a college doesn't mean they're
right for the job. It just means they had the money to go, and the brains to
study hard enough the night before a test. (just a bit of sarcasm there,
don't go getting all bent out of shape you Dsers)
Anyway, relax, enjoy the holiday, and that Christmas 5 pack.
