Howdy John,
I used to call Charlotte home for 25 years! designed and
installed many systems there and in surrounding states. Who are the DS owners
there now? Do you ever have any dealings with The Inspirational Network and
weren't they doing a stock car show for a while?

Subject: My boss hates DS
Last year I took it upon myself to become a DS editor so I could free lance
and possibly get a full time job at a facility that has a DS. Instead I
have wound up doing some free lancing here in town (we only have two facilities
with DS in Charlotte, NC) and also I have been fortunate to have unlimited
access to a DS Nitris through our reseller here in town. I currently work
for NASCAR Images which has recently been taken over by a bunch of NFL
films and FOX guys, so we are having a change of the guards so to speak and not
everyone is cool with that. I quite frankly am excited about all the
changes.
Well our vice president (who is from films) says we are
eventually getting a DS, but my direct boss who is the post production
supervisor HATES DS and says media composer and symphony rule and not to mention
DS to him again. I cannot begin to tell you how much my DS classes have
helped me in further understanding my trade. Even on Media composer and After
Effects I now understand how to work with removing 3:2 pulldowns for graphics
and even editing in 24p which is imperitive since everything we do is on film or
HD.
I can't believe all these rumors about avid doing away with DS because of
Symphony Nitris. On symphony and media composer (they are really the same box,
lets face it) there is no composite interface like there is on DS. That
right there sells me on DS because I have to do compositing where I work and it
takes me forever to export quick times to After Effects, and lets not forget how
long it takes for it to render.
Anyway my boss is very hard headed and has worked for NASCAR
Images since it was just a hole in the wall and he does not
welcome change. But to my surprise his boss saw to it that my training
expenses were reimbursed. So hopefully we will have that wonderful DS
soon.... Oh...uh...if Avid keeps making it and we can breathe a sigh of relief
and continue doing our work the way it should be done!
Happy Holidays.
John
