Hi Scott -
The deck will not tell you what frame rate a tape was originally recorded
at. The only thing it will do is not playback audio in some circumstances
when you play the tape at the wrong speed. I used to have a chart that
showed, but I can't find it right now, so I did a test.
Anything recorded in the 24 fps range (24p, 23.98p) will playback audio at
any 25 fps speed (25p, 50i), but slightly sped up.
Likewise any 25 fps will playback at 24 fps, only slowed down.
Neither 24 fps or 25 fps will playback audio at any of the 30 fps speeds
(30p, 29.97p, 59.94i or 60i) and the 30 fps tapes won't playback audio at 24
or 25 fps speeds.
Any tape will playback audio if played back at any speed in its range, ie. a
29.97p tape will playback audio at 60i.
At least that's what it looked like to me. YMMV.

Graham/Marc;
We've finally got the deck in......Here's were my inexperience with the 500
come into play....The tape was NOT labeled correctly (or at all) and does
not clearly state the frame rate?? How do I tell?? Does/will the deck tell
me?? Right now I'm shooting in the dark!! and checking all the frame
rates...would be nice to know for sure!!

Isn't all this the same as what I had written in the first place? If you
have a 30 sec spot, I needs to remain a 30 second spot, not 31,32,33, or 34.
The 4% increase does no good. He's using master tapes, and needs to re-purp
them for the US market (NTSC). They still need to be 30. So either way, he's
going to need to do a time warp which equals render time. Or go get a UFC
and do it that way.
