Perhaps you it's a 8 bit render instead of a 16 bits and that's the
difference.

I did what you suggest, there still difference in the video levels.
Probably
QT reference is not something to trust if you need to export to another
package and keep the right levels. Or is a bug....

No, I was being sarcastic.

QT ref out is always video levels. To avoid your stepping issue, flip
your imput levels to video in the capture settings before you
reimport.
