I realize it's more expensive than the $20 font, but if you get some money to buy plug-ins with, I highly recommend Trapcode's Shine and 3d Stroke plugins.  And each one is still under $100.

All good tips man.  Santa didn't bring AE 6.0 though.  I have  version 5.  Your ideas are really cool though.  I saw  the presets in 6 and they look pretty slick.  I used a little gold edge ray to shine around the letters and it looks alright but a little too plain.  Anyhow I give it my best.

My first thought is find a font set with hieroglyphics.  That way you have a bunch in a vector format. If you want to do a morph, I would use AE's mask morphing function.  Create the hieros in Illustrator and copy/paste them to a solid in AE.  They will be converted to masks.
