Howard,
I'm sure you've thought of this, but the workflow that I would try with HVX/DS would be to capture with XpressPro HD on the same machine as DS- then link the files.

btw, most of the clips from this camera floating around the net are looking very nice indeed.
curious how it all works out myself.

We haven't really thought too hard about DS workflow with it. We bought it to replace our over-the-hill BetaSP rig for video shoots. The shoot we bought it for will be cut in our Final Cut suite, so unless there is a real need for DS, it won't leave the FCP realm (by realm I mean FCP, AE, Photoshop).

I guess I was thinking that if DS can import the MXF media, it would be trivial to move the media over GigE to the DS's media drive and go from there. However, since we are shooting this project in 480/24pa, DS is a lame duck since it can't deal with the advanced pulldown. So, if I need DS for anything, it'll be QT in/out of DS. Not terrible, but not terribly fast, either.

What I have done with miniDV projects is import the miniDV footage into FCP, removing the advanced pulldown on capture. Then, if I need a bunch of it in DS, I dump out to DigiBeta from FCP (inserting regular 3:2 pulldown) and then I can digitize that into DS. It's worked well on a couple of projects where there was mostly telecine DigiBeta transfer tapes but also one miniDV tape that was some extra b-roll type footage.

If you have access to both FCP and DS, you can do about anything. Your arms just have to be long enough to run both at once.  ;-)

PS--I'll keep the list posted on the camera. So far, I've had positive reports from the field crew. They are currently archiving the files to a bus-powered FW drive hooked into the PowerBook so they can wipe the cards and shoot some more. My plan is to then import the P2 files from the FW drive back at the studio for the edit session. It ought to work nicely. I'm almost finished with a little AppleScript that should help the crew in transferring the files from P2 > FW drive, too.  :-)

Thanks Matt,

Keep us posted. Do you have a way to get files into your DS? If you use a high-end  PCMCIA slot on your DS can you digitize from that? That would be slick.

Just got ours in yesterday. I spent the day with it and a PowerBook with FCP 5.

I gotta tell you - it's a treat when things work like they are supposed to.

P2 cards are slick. Import into FCP directly from the P2 card inserted into the PowerBook's slot was painless and faster than I thought it would be.

We are shooting with it in the field today and next week, so I'll get to see what it can do with proper lighting and setup (I'm just the editor/tech guy, not really a shooter). We are primarily going to be using it for SD stuff, so we'll shoot 480i/24p in DVCPRO50 format. Curiously, it can fit more 720p content onto the P2 cards than SD because it can record 720/pn, recording only the true 23.98 fps onto the cards without the advanced pulldown. Neato.

If there are more questions, feel free to ask. I spent about 6 hours with it, looking at it from a computer integration standpoint.

Has anyone actually edited footage from the new Panasonic HVX200 Camcorder that shoots 4:2:2 ? What platform did you use? What adaptors or "boxes" if any are required?

We are in the market for a "cheapie"  HD camcorder and with the HVX200s release we are anxious to here about real experiences with the format on a DS system.

What say you??
