Finally a fast mac laptop
I really hate when they see the need to put the name "Pro" on something

This may seem a bit blunt but I would not even spend $20K on such asubscribe ds
system until we see if DS still exists as a distinct product after NAB
2006. Avid is staying completely silent on the subject.. We shall see. I
certainly hope that the DS brand and philosophy does not cease to exist.
A re-write of the system is OK but not if it loses its many good
distinctives.

We've had this discussion before friends:
How many of you would buy a $10k 'software only' version of DS. Or even
a
$20k compositing station as a COMPLEMENT to DS? Basically a DS without a
Nitris BOB that could be used for compositing and cutting mattes etc.
Media would have to be ingested on the DS Nitris and would be shared the
same way RP media is shared. You wouldn't be able to do much with this
station without a DS Nitris as 'big brother' except with file based
material
which honestly DS ain't so compelling for...
I might even $30k if they included the HP workstation/video card combo.
Plus
for me I'd have to buy a Unity seat for each one I got...Avid could make
MORE MONEY from me AND MAKE ME HAPPIER AT THE SAME TIME...
Offer a $50k version with Audio/Video OUTPUT only and I'd buy that
too...

Theorectically speaking, of course, the DS, as with the Media
andthe
Xpress, that you guys are discussing, would operate just fine witout
hardware. The Hardware is not much more than an I/O box. All theYou
processing
is done in the CPU. True, how would you then get the clips into it,
firewire? Not actice in DS software yet. MC and Xpress it is though.
could firewire it. Or DVD/CD.conform, or
Wouldn't it be the coolest things if you could buy a fully functional
version of DS to run on laptops or other PCs, to say, offline,
composite? Then being able to save out your project, open it on the DSoutput.
with
Nitris hardware, and either recapture the media, render, and/or
Kindthe
of, take on FCp where it really matters. (And I say FCP solely because
that
seems to be Avid's biggest competition right now.)
I guess that would compete with Xpress pro and the lower end avid
products,
and we certainly don't want to muddle up the product line...(snicker

Precisely one of the reasons that Avid always likes to sell some Avid
branded and proprietary hardware as part of each high end system.
Software is not good without the Nitris or Equinox eh?
Purple boxes....little purple boxes. They're everywhere. They are
everywhere!
On the early DS systems the only thing you could not find direct from
manufacturer was the dongle;-) A very strong reason to leave theolder
MacOf
based Avids behind and switch to the early SoftImage DS.

At the very least, Apple could place the equivelantDom Q. Silverio
of a "dongle" into hardware on the motherboard. I
don't see anyone reverse-engineering "dongles" so
that they may run expensive applications like the DS
or AutoCad on just any computer.
