Hi Rick,
One other trick that has bitten me (too many times), make sure that when
you go to capture you have selected the audio tab under captured and
patched tracks - the default seems to come up as mono with no patches.
No patches, no audio. Once selected, they stay put within the project
(until you change them).
You can hit record all day and not get a single piece of audio - even
with meters bouncing.

One issue is that as long as you have the remote cable hooked up to a
vtr and the vtr is playing then DS will take the timecode through the
remote cable from the vtr. You have to unhook the cable to get DS to
generate tc.
Another issue that comes to mind is that you might have to feed the
video input with a proper signal.
