I prefer to not use automatic updates but rather check the Windows Update
website regularly and have the updates installed "manually" when the machine
is not busy.
The auto-update function can be disabled using the control panel applet.
Don't deactivate the service itself (via Service Manager), as Windows Update
won't work if you do this.
Personally, I don't like Internet-related communication going on
automatically in the background, i.e. without me initiating or at least
seeing it. One of the first things I do after installing software is
checking its auto-update capabilities and disabling it. (Anti-virus
signature updates are certainly an exception here.)
