I always prefer a compete clean install on any system I get.
I then know exactly whats what and more importantly I know I have all the
tools and skills to do it in an emergency if required.
My advise:
Buy a new internal HDD (nice fast one) and do the install onto that. You
then still have the old one at hand if required to drag anything you've
forgotten.
When you finally have your new install running and tested and all ok. You
can image your new installation onto the old drive as a backup.
Nothing nicer than having a spare HDD already configured and ready to go if
you should have a problem in the future.
