Judy asked "In what way does Vegas suck at that?"
Print to
Tape controls are rudimentary, and in general, it's fussy and not nearly as
simple and smooth as it should be. No way to enter a TC number to
start the PTT without manually parking the machine at the start frame, for one
example. And -- no machine control in the dialog box for printing to
tape. IMHO that sucks. It seems PTT was an afterthought.
So -- I use Vegas to edit, composite, mix audio, convert files and formats, and
be creative. But, i don't use Vegas to either capture or PTT unless absolutely
necessary.
I think the NLE to really keep a watch on is Edius from
Canopus and soon to be from Thomson. I've seen 7 major upgrades in the software
in just 14 months with no end in sight. Yesterday, I was playing back
uncompressed HD (1080i) in small segments over a Gig ethernet connection with
it. (Source was on a SAN captured with Kona card from Mac).
Maybe
one day, there will be an NLE that has all the tools in one package and all the
tools done well enough to stay within that package. For now -- I use the
tool for the job.
