I've experienced this with DSR machines before.  You can use the SDTI (smpte 305) all day but for whatever reason, our DSR1500 would only take embedded sdi from another sony machine (DSR, SX and Digi).  I've tried using embedded from a Pani machine into the DSR to no avail but any sony to the DSR via SDI worked fine.   Makes the Digibeta an awful expensive transcoder :-).
